Volvo Ocean Race Coming to Galway and How Center Jewellers Plan to Celebrate 2012

The countdown to the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race to Galway has well and truly began and the city is full of buzz and chat about the event.  The last time the Volvo Ocean Race came to Galway the whole city came out and partied and I expect that this time the crowds will be even bigger and the party longer and louder.

For those of you who have not visited our beautiful city before then you are in for a big treat as Galway is know as the party capital of Ireland.  We are well used to hosting large scale festivals such as the Galway Races (one of my fav. events), the Galway Oyster Festival and The Arts Festival so those coming to enjoy the Volvo Ocean Race Finale will witness something really special.

As all our staff are native Galwegians I asked them to put together a quick guide to the best places to stay, eat and party in Galway during the Volvo Ocean Race. So here's what they had to say....

Accomodation:

Best budget accommodation; Kinaly Hostel on Eyre Squate, great central location and really clean. Best budget hotels, probably The Western located at the top of Eyre Square.  The Travel Lodge is a little further out but you could still walk to the city from here.   Mid price hotels recommended by our staff are as follows; Foster Court Hotel, great staff, great food and great location tell them Center Jewellers sent you and you might get an additional discount. The best Family Friendly hotels are the Menlo Park, The Claregalway hotel (located in Claregalway village about 8 miles from Galway city) and the Maldon located in Oranmore about 5 miles from Galway City. In terms of luxury accomodation its really hard to beat the Radisson Blu Hotel.  Its certainly our favourite but it is expensive.

Best Restaurant:

Again the guys rated these according to budget and good food and service.  Best budget restaurant, Fat Freddys on Quay Street, always a great atmosphere and inexpensive. Best Mid price restaurant Mcswiggans Restaurant, always have great food and value and their desserts are devine (we have tried them so we know).  Mid to Expensive, Les Gemmells again its located on Quay Street, Kirbys, located beside Busker Brownes pub. And my personal favourite, Kirwins Lane, located just off Quay Street.  Their seafood is devine and they have an extensive wine list.  Service is excellent.  I like to dine at the seafood bar located downstairs or if the weather is nice, outside. Most family friendly, Milano's

Best Pubs.

This was really hard as the staff in Center Jewellers have a very active social life and there is so many great pubs so we had real trouble narrowing the list but here it goes...... Bunch of Grapes  on Quay Street (great for a real Irish Coffee, Caroline makes the best in town). Front Door (right beside Bunch of Grapes) great atmosphere always jammed so get there early if you want a seat. Busker Brownes we always frequest the wine bar at the botton of Kirbys restaurant, they have a late license so no early closing here.  If you want to listen to some Irish music while enjoying a pint of Guinness then Taffess is your pub. During the Volvo Ocean Race Quay Street will be one big party zone so anywhere along here and you will be guranteed a good time.  Staff also recommended Monroes Taven at the bottom of Dominic Street, they alway have great live music.

Best NightClub. Halo Nightclub, Abbeygate Street, hands down won this vote.

Hope you find our quick guide to Galway City useful and if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to answer your query. To celebrate the Volvo Ocean Race arrival in Galway, Center Jewellers will be launching their range of Volvo ocean race inspired jewellery shortly so stay tuned  for this exciting development...

Untill next time.
